Ladies and Gentlemen...   please click on the View Support Materials button next to the graphic in the middle column of the Advisory Board / Internship page, and take a look at the new Advisory Board Involvement Continuum Matrix.   This document is still in draft form, but is intended to guide the involvement of AB members with Academy students beginning with pre-Academy students still in the 8th grade, all the way through graduation.  Since this is still a draft, I would like your feedback on this form; the format, the timing and the involvement items themselves.  Please use the form at your upcoming Strategic Planning meeting in the Fall, and let me know how it goes.  I welcome your input and ideas.  I can be reached at charlie@naf.org.  Have a great summer.  Talk with you soon.

Charlie

Step Up to the Advisory Board Recruitment Challenge – Part 2

Due to the Network response to the Advisory Board Recruitment Challenge – Part 2, NAF has decided to extend the deadline of this Challenge to March 31, 2010.   Academies now have four months to “step up to the Challenge.”   Here’s all you have to do:

1-       Update the Advisory Board information on your NAF database (remove names no longer on the AB, update contact information, etc.)

2-       Notify Charlie Katz via email ( charlie@naf.org ) of the starting number of your AB members as of July 1, 2009.   Remember that AB members ONLY include business partners, non-profits, higher ed, associations and other civic community members.   District, school and other learning community members are NOT included in the Challenge counts.

3-       Recruit 2 NEW AB members between now and March 31, 2010.   New AB members should be of the type mentioned in #2 above.

4-       All Academies who recruit at least 2 NEW AB members by March 31, 2010 will qualify for one entry into a drawing.   The prize is two-fold: 1- a free trip to the 2010 Institute for one of your AB members (airfare, hotel and registration fees), and 2- a free laptop computer for the winning Director (value up to $1,000.)

5-       Each NAF Alumnus you recruit qualifies you for one additional entry into the drawing.

6-       Notify Charlie Katz of the ending number of your AB members (as of March 31, 2010) no later than April 7, 2010.

7-       The drawing will take place on April 15, 2010.

If you have any questions, please contact Charlie Katz at charlie@naf.org .   Good luck!   Step up to the Challenge!

As we enter the 2009/2010 school year, recruiting new Advisory Board (AB) members is an ongoing process (or should be.)  Business people are constantly getting promoted, hired, fired, transferred, etc., and it's likely that even your most dedicated and engaged AB partners will have to say goodbye one day.  If you're staying on top of this potential "turnover" issue, you will often have new people at your AB table.

The following New AB Member Orientation Meeting Agenda helps an Academy Director and/or Advisory Board Chair orient a new AB member(s) to the Academy model, so they can be productive, engaged participants as quickly as possible.

This Orientation meeting should take about an hour, and can be done one-on-one, or in a group setting.  NAF's Regional Director and/or Director of Advisory Board Development could participate, but the Agenda is really designed to be delivered by either the Academy Director, Advisory Board Chair, or both.

Please see the attached links for all the references mentioned in the following New AB Member Orientation Agenda.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Charlie Katz at charlie@naf.org , or  646-761-0786

Also, I welcome your Comments to this blog.  Please add your comments by clicking the Comments link, under the title above.  Thanks.

New Advisory Board Member Orientation

This is a 30 – 60 minute briefing for new AB members.   It can be done by the Academy Director and/or the Advisory Board Chair prior to, during, or just after the first AB meeting attended by the new member(s).   If possible (or necessary,) the NAF Regional Director and/or NAF’s Director of Advisory Board Development could participate via conference call.   Note that all references to support materials are accessible on the Collaboration Network, Advisory Board & Internships tab, under View Support MaterialsThe direct links are listed below.

It would be helpful if this were done in an empty classroom at the school with access to the internet.   Copies of the materials discussed could be printed out, but new AB member(s) should be shown how to access www.naf.org, go to myNAF, create a login and password, and then access the Collaboration Network for all the information below.  The Advisory Board Chair should give a brief tour of the Advisory Boards & Interships page on the Collaboration Network; especially the Multimedia Presentations, View Support Materials, and Advisory Board News areas.

Advisory Board Recruitment Challenge (ABRC) – Part 2

For those of you who missed the first round of the Advisory Board Recruitment Challenge, and for those who did participate before, here is your chance to WIN!   The goals and procedures of the Advisory Board Recruitment Challenge - Part 2 are simple.  Between now and December 15, 2009:

1-       Access your Advisory Board information in your account on NAF’s database

          a.        Remove any old Advisory Board members who are no longer on your Advisory Board

          b.       Update any contact information for existing and new Advisory Board members through June 30, 2009

          c.       THEN, Email Charlie Katz ( charlie@naf.org ) with the following:

                          i.       Subject Line: AB Database Updated

ii.       Body of Email:   Total number of Advisory Board members on June 30, 2009 = _ xx _ (REMEMBER TO INCLUDE ONLY NON-SCHOOL PEOPLE – EXAMPLE:   BUSINESS, NON-PROFIT, GOVERNMENT, HIGHER EDUCATION PEOPLE ONLY in your number)

2-       Then, recruit at least 2 new Advisory Board members between July 1, 2009 and December 15, 2009.

3-       When you have recruited at least 2 new members, you qualify for ONE ENTRY in the ABRC drawing for a FABULOUS PRIZE at the end of December.   AND, for each NAF Alumnus you recruit to your Advisory Board during the contest period, you qualify for an ADDITIONAL ENTRY.

4-       NAF will keep track of all Academies which enter the Challenge, and will contact you at the close of the Challenge to see if you've qualified for the drawing.  NAF will then make an announcement of the winning Academies (1st , 2nd and 3rd place winners) by the end of the calendar year.   Be sure to visit the Advisory Board blog dated February 10, 2009 below for more ABRC contest rules and information about updating your database.

Best of luck.   Let the games begin!!!

The following Advisory Board News Forum item was posted on September 29, 2008.  At that time, I could see that finding paid internship positions this summer was going to be a challenge.  I have therefore copied the post from last September below, so you can re-read it.  Maybe some ideas will bubble up as we get close to this summer's internship season.

Additionally, NAF recognizes that until the economy gains some footing again, finding paid positions, particularly for high school students, is going to be rough.  Here are some additional thoughts and ideas:

  1. More so than ever, Academy Directors must turn to their Advisory Board members to help find and secure paid internship postions.  AB members may be able to call in some favors, talk with business people with whom they have a strong connection, network at meetings of professionals, etc.  In short, AB members may be able to connect with people whom an Academy Director may never get to know, and find an internship or two in the process.
  2. Leverage those existing summer jobs that students already have.  We talked about this before.  You just need to elevate the "job" into an internship by talking with the students' supervisor, and explaining how to make this change.  Most supervisors will be willing to give a student a more robust experience, and in doing so, create a real internship for the student.
  3. Consider hiring an Academy student to help the Advisory Board.  An intern could help with correspondence, updating database information and rosters, help with student and AB member recruiting, etc.  Put some funding to use hiring a student.  That's a good use of precious dollars, and will really benefit the student.
  4. Consider approaching a couple of local realtors.  As the housing market freeze begins to thaw, realtors will want to begin advertising again, and getting their names out there again.  A student intern can help write copy, distribute signs, make phone calls to set up meetings, etc.  In turn, a student intern can learn a lot about finance (mortgages, interest rates, credit, etc.) hospitality (customer service, location of property, etc.), and IT (online applications, credit checks, financing models, etc.)

We need to be really creative here.  Think outside the box, and let's climb as high as we can for the tough to reach fruit.  Please see the posting below, and review the comments too.  There may be a real nugget there, that can make the difference for several students.

Please feel free to email me directly, if you want to discuss some other ideas.  My email is ckatz@naf.org, or charlie@naf.org

The current financial news isn't good.  And no matter how the Feds try to fix it, it is likely we're in for some rough times ahead finding paid internship positions for our Academy students; not just AOF students, but all students.  So, what do we do about it?  How do we find paid internships for high school students in challenging times, such as we're in right now?

Well, part of the answer is Creativity and Flexibility.  Until recently, NAF has pretty much held to the "summer between the junior and senior years" rule.  That is, the paid internship position was for 6-10 weeks during the summer, at a pay scale at, or slightly above minimum wage, during the summer after the junior year of high school.

In light of the current goings on, Academy Directors, Advisory Board Chairs, and Internship Committee Chairs and members need to be thinking "outside the box."  Maybe even outside their comfort zones.  Although NAF hasn't changed its mandate that internships need to be paid positions, creative and flexible Directors and Advisory Board members are now thinking that paid internships could be fit into the Academy students' schedule anytime after the end of the junior year, and before graduation.  As an example, we could be thinking about:

     - paid internships extending during the senior year, part-time after school and on weekends

     - turning an existing after-school "job" into a bonafide paid internship

     - finding multiple, short-term positions (lasting two or three weeks each) with multiple local, small business owners

     - using grants or contributions from companies or other sources too far away from the school to provide an actual position for a student, to pay a student a stipend to work closer to home or the school

     - Financial positions or IT positions at a local hospital, in their Records or Accounting departments

     - Hospitality positions in a local automobile dealership in their customer service area

     - Internships at public utility companies, local and regional government offices, public works divisions, the school district offices, retail, fast-food, public libraries, theme parks/attractions, etc.

     - Asking parents (and other relatives) to find positions for their own Academy students (and other students) at their place of work

     - Finding businesses (regardless of the type of business) in your area that are doing well (see the Sunday business section of the local paper for "movers and shakers") and asking them for help

     - Asking established school alumni for help (find names on Classmates.com or through existing Alumni Association)

     - Ask for internships at "high end" local establishments (hotels, restaurants, auto dealerships, etc.; locations whose clientele may be less affected by the current economic downturn)

The current economic conditions call for extreme measures, if each of our eligible Academy students is to get a satisfying, enriching and life-changing paid internship experience.  I encourage all Academy Directors, ABCs and Internship Committee members to be thoughtful and creative as we get through this tough time together.
