The Bright Ideas education grant program, which awards grants to North Carolina teachers for innovative classroom-based projects, is accepting applications. North Carolina's Touchstone Energy cooperatives, including the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation, have earmarked more than $590,000 in grants to be distributed to deserving teachers in the state this school year.

Certified K-12 North Carolina teachers from participating schools are eligible to apply for Bright Ideas grants of up to $2,000 each for creative projects that would otherwise go unfunded. The application includes an explanation and outline of the proposed project and how it will benefit students in the classroom. Applications are accepted from teachers in a variety of disciplines, including music, art, history, reading, science, career-planning, and information technology. Grant recipients are selected based on a competitive evaluation process done by each local electric cooperative.

Tom's of Maine is bringing back its popular "50 States for Good" program, which invites non-profit 501(c)3 organizations to nominate their community programs and encourages consumers to vote for programs they feel should be one of five recipients of a $100,000 Community Action Fund.
